Early and Primary Learning Centre

1 Gerrard Close

68 Rannoch Ave

Riverside TAS 7250

Primary Plans

Kindergarten - Our Early Learning Centre opened in Legana in September 2018 and provides a program which meets the needs of Kindergarten age students.  We are registered as a Childcare Centre, not a school, but both require the same Early Years Learning Program and you can do our Early Learning Program rather than Kindergarten.  Clara, our Early Learning Teacher, runs this program.

Primary Years - we have submitted our registration to open a primary school in 2020 and that registraion should be finalised prior to the end of 2019. This will mean our Early Learning students can progress to Prep with Patersonia in 2020. We have submitted registration documents for Prep to Grade 6 and can enrol a maximum of 15 students in our first year.

At this point we can confirm the following important points about Patersonia Primary:

  • For 2020 and 2021 we will be located at 1 Gerrard Close, Legana in a small building we lease from Legana Christian Church (we have no other links with Legana Christian Church or any other religious organisation except as a tenant.) After 2021 we are searching for a property to buy to turn into our learning centre.

  • We will be a very small school – just one class in 2020 of between 10 and 15 students, plus out early learning centre of approximately 10 students a day.

  • We are attempting to register all years from Prep to Grade 6, meaning that our small classes will spread across age groups and be more like a natural village than a traditional class.  Research supports that students possibly learn best from older children than teachers which is a fascinating bonus to multi-age groups.

  • Students will go on excursions every Tuesday and Thursday to regular locations where they can be in nature such at Camp Carnacoo, Myrtle Park or Trevallyn Nature Reserve

  • Every child will have there own personal learning plan.  They do not require any sort of diagnosis or gifted declaration to be entitled to one. This learning plan will cover how they will meet Australian Curriculum requirements, plus other projects and areas of interest that the child wants to explore and any areas that require special attention to meet their needs.

  • Literacy and numeracy will be taught using evidence based methodologies that provide a strong foundation for all children including those with learning differences (this is an important topic worthy of a thesis and I only mention it here to highlight that we believe that strong foundations in literacy and numeracy are important as well as other core evidence based learning such as the importance of child led unstructured play).

  • While we must meet Australian Curriculum requirements, a large portion of time will be spent pursuing areas of interest to the child

  • While we must meet Australian reporting requirements, we will focus reporting on each child’s individual improvements, rather than comparing them to others
